Will I Get Stress Fractures From Running?

Running is a great form of exercise but is a high impact physical activity and stress fractures can occur due to this BUT it is not the case for all runners.

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone caused by repetitive stress or force.

Some causes of stress fractures are; poor bio-mechanics, over-training, doing too much too soon, weak muscles, training on hard surfaces such as concrete and wearing inappropriate footwear or old footwear.

In addition, some people are predisposed to stress fractures due to poor diet and osteoporosis.

Therefore, it is important to learn about running and to think about getting a running program before commencing a high impact sport. Some of our patients have made an appointment at our clinics to check their bio-mechanics and their footwear in order to prevent injury and allow them to achieve their fitness goals.
