4 Tips To Avoid Overuse Injuries

Before you can consider preventing overuse injuries occurring, you need to consider why overuse injuries occur in the first place.

You place your body under physical stress through activity and exercise which is beneficial to our bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments making us stronger.
During the re-modelling process there is a build up and breakdown of tissue. The issue with this is that sometimes the breakdown of our muscles occurs more rapidly than the build up leading to an overuse injury.

More often than not, overuse injuries occur due to training errors.

These training errors may include having a sudden increase in intensity, duration and frequency of activities.

Those who return to exercise too quickly, have poor technique, have imbalances in strength and flexibility, have poor alignment of the body and weak areas from old injuries that have not had proper rehabilitation, are at risk.

The 4 best ways to avoid overuse injuries as as follows:

– Increasing your mileage slowly by undertaking the 10% rule in which each week you gradually increase pace and mileage. This rule also needs to apply to strength training programs
– Making sure that you warm up and cool down before all exercise and activity
– Incorporating strength training and increasing flexibility and core stability
– Allow 48 hours between workouts to allow your body to recover, which allows you to reduce your risk of injury.

It is important that, if you have experienced an overuse injury that reduces your duration and frequency of activity, you work on proper technique, icing minor injuries and undertaking proper rehabilitation to ensure that you get your feet back up and moving.
